Calicanto (Veneto-Italy)

Picture
Calicanto is on the folk-music scene since the early 80s, and has started its activity in Autumn 1981, paying a particular attention to ethnomusicological research and traditions’ study and recovery in the area of Venice and its surroundings.
The musicians of the band – Roberto and Giancarlo Tombesi are member of the band since its birth – worked hard around music and instruments, also reconstructing an ancient venetian bagpipe called “piva”, holding concerts all over Europe in the 80s, partecipating to important festivals, such as: Douarnenez (F), Lorient (F), Dranouter (B), Farnham (GB).
In the 90s Calicanto creates soundtracks for movies and live music for theatre productions, and this ability has soon became one of the main characteristic of the band.
The project Labirintomare, a CD and a special concert with 25 musicians from the Northern Adriatic area created much attention around the activity of the band, and in 2002 Calicanto is invited to take part to the XXXVI Smithsonian Folklife Festival in Washington, organized by the Silk Road Project and directed by Yo-Yo Ma.
The latest ten years see Calicanto involved in many different projects: research in the North Adriatic and Euganean Hills area, a collaboration with galician folk band Milladoiro, an important CD for the 25 years of activity called Isole senza mar, awarded with the Coup de coeur by Academie Charles Cros.
In 2008 Calicanto presents “La magnifica intrapresa” with the great actress Laura Curino.
In 2009 Calicanto is called to represent Italy in an international project called Hattusha, organized by Middle East Technical University (Ankara - Turkey) and Corum Hittite University (Corum - Turkey). In that occasion Calicanto performs with the Cihat Askin Ensemble, and international guests: Okan Murat Ozturk, Ferhat Erdem, Cihat Askin and many others.
The most important production of the latest seasons is the project S-Confini Mediterranei that sees Calicanto playing together with a symphonic orchestra in a concert that blends popular music, fok ensemble, classical music approach, fok repertoire, in an unique experiment that is documented in the cd Mosaico, published in occasion of the 30th year of activity of Calicanto.

Biography

2011 is the 30th year of activity of the italian band Calicanto. Thirty years of research, composition, rielaboration, teaching, playing around tradition and culture of the Northern Adriatic Sea, beginning an ideal journey through the whole Meditterranean Sea, from Venezia.
Each piece of this new adventure is a small piece of a mosaic which tells the several roads taken by the group: the revision and the revitalization of tradition, the musical work on lyrical text linked to the area of Veneto (Biagio Marin, Hugo Pratt), the collaboration with the theatre (Laura Curino, Titino Carrara), the meeting, never happened before in Veneto, between traditional repertoire and classical music (Orchestra Regionale Filarmonia Veneta, the composer Gianluca Baldi).
This concert reveals once more the love for Venice, the lagoon, the Adriatic, the Mediterranean and the music wears new colours also through the contribution of new
talents.
“Calicanto is above all a sound. It’s a vibration, a text and a timbre that narrate. Thus, the songs and the tunes of this concert come out, from the meeting with the theatre, with a symphony orchestra, with the stories, the tunes of Northern Adriatic, the dreams under Venice’s big sky. At every appointment Calicanto brings its own essence: a sound and a stage presence that make of it a unique, thirty-year experience”
